Soaring Airfares to Kashmir: Costlier Than International Travel

A Comparative Look at Domestic and International Air Travel Costs

January 1, 2025 | Srinagar, J&K

Traveling to the picturesque Kashmir Valley has become a luxury that rivals or even surpasses international travel. Astonishingly, airfare for routes like Delhi to Srinagar is significantly higher than flights to destinations such as Dubai, revealing a trend that affects not just tourism but the daily lives of residents.

Comparative Airfare Analysis

On December 31, 2024, a one-way flight from Delhi to Dubai was priced at Rs 10,000 to Rs 13,000, while a flight from Delhi to Srinagar cost an exorbitant Rs 21,623. Similarly, tickets from Mumbai to Srinagar reached Rs 21,843, and Bangalore to Srinagar exceeded Rs 20,000.

Factors Behind Skyrocketing Airfares

  • Seasonal Demand: The influx of tourists during peak seasons, particularly around New Year's Eve, significantly increases demand for air travel to Kashmir.
  • Supply and Demand Imbalance: Limited flight availability coupled with surging demand creates an artificial scarcity, driving up prices.
  • Closure of National Highway: The temporary closure of the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway due to recent celebrations further exacerbated the reliance on air travel, contributing to the price hike

    Impact on Residents and Tourists

The exorbitant airfares are taking a toll on various segments of society:

    • Patients and Families: Srinagar resident Irshad Ahmad shared his story, spending Rs 2.10 lakh for ten family members to travel to Delhi for critical medical treatment.

    • Students and Professionals: Regular travelers, such as students and businesspeople, bear the brunt of this surge, impacting their budgets and plans.

    • Tourism Industry: Local travel agents like Bashir Ahmad argue that unchecked price hikes deter tourists and strain the region’s economy. "A price cap is essential to ensure affordability," he emphasizes.

      Broader Implications on Tourism

A parliamentary panel has flagged the adverse effects of high airfares on Kashmir’s tourism. The Department-Related Parliamentary Standing Committee on Transport, Tourism, and Culture stated in its report:

"Escalating airfares, particularly during peak seasons, act as a major deterrent to tourism. Prices comparable to international destinations make J&K less appealing to potential visitors."

Table 2: Tourism Trends in Kashmir (2019-2024)

Year          Domestic Tourist Arrivals          International Tourist Arrivals
      2019          11,00,000          60,000
      2020          4,50,000          25,000
      2021          8,20,000          40,000
      2022          10,50,000          50,000
      2023          9,80,000          45,000

    A Call for Action

    • The Ministry of Tourism has engaged the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) to address the issue. However, MoCA clarified that airfares are dictated by market dynamics and are beyond governmental control. This leaves residents, tourists, and stakeholders in a lurch.

      Proposed Solutions:

      1. Capping Peak-Season Fares: Implement a mechanism to regulate prices during high-demand periods.

      2. Increasing Flights: Add more flights to Srinagar during peak seasons to balance supply and demand.

      3. Infrastructure Improvements: Focus on improving road connectivity to reduce dependence on air travel.

        Conclusion

The Kashmir Valley remains one of the most enchanting destinations in India, but its charm is overshadowed by skyrocketing airfares. A collaborative effort between stakeholders is essential to make travel affordable and reinstate Kashmir as a preferred destination for all.

Foreign Investors Abandon China, Flock to India in a $9 Billion Stock Buying Surge

Foreign investors have diverted their attention from China to embark on a substantial stock buying spree in India, amounting to a staggering $9 billion. This influx of capital has positioned them as the dominant purchasers in the Indian equity market for the current financial year. According to NSDL records, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) have only been net sellers on 8 out of 51 trading sessions in FY24. In contrast, domestic institutional investors (DIIs) have purchased stocks worth approximately Rs 6,500 crore, significantly lower than the Rs 72,000 crore invested by FIIs in Indian rupee terms. The ongoing rally of the Nifty by 8.5% in the June quarter, nearing all-time peak levels, has solidified India's appeal. This surge in foreign investment comes as China's economic rebound, which was observed earlier this year, lost momentum in the second quarter.
